FALL 2012 ISSUE
Greetings from the folks at Roof Top Sedums!

It seems the hottest part of this dry summer is finally behind us, and many areas are seeing at least some rainfall and cooler temperatures as fall approaches. However, it's still important to make sure your plants are hydrated and healthy. Even deep-rooted trees in the landscapes struggled this season, so it's to be expected that a shallow soil depth, like a green roof, is going to need supplemental water during extended periods of heat and drought. The record-breaking temps and dry conditions were a true test in green roof survival, and we saw a definite correlation in regards to quality with green roofs that had some supplemental irrigation vs. green roofs that were non-irrigated.
Green roof systems are typically planted with water-conserving succulents that perform well in hot, dry conditions. Prolonged drought, however, can weaken even the most resilient plants and result in thinning or losses on the green roof. Certain varieties can go dormant or even decline in extremely dry conditions, while other varieties seem to actually thrive during the hottest and driest periods. This is why it's so important to diversify your green roof plants, using the hardiest and most proven varieties of sedum species. We pride ourselves in customizing a diverse palette for each project, and using the newest and best varieties that are only offered through the LiveRoof® System.

Roof Top Sedums had a busy summer, and look for upcoming fall installations in your area!

We're always thrilled to grow new projects that will add function and beautify our clients' spaces. Summer projects that were installed include Black Hawk College Sustainable Technologies Center and the Iowa Landings - Coralville West Parking Facility, both installed by Diamond Installer T&K Roofing.

Most recently installed was the LiveRoof® Deep System on the rooftop of the Pearl View Condos at the Historic Hotel Muscatine building in Muscatine, Iowa. A beautiful view of the Mississippi River is now enhanced with a green roof that showcases over 25 beautiful wildflower and grass varieties and two customized sedum base mixes.

Fall installations are coming up and we are excited to have a busy shipping schedule! This week a 10,800 sq ft green roof utilizing the LiveRoof® Standard System is being installed at the Siena Francis House in Omaha NE. It is a beautiful and diverse mix of 30 hardy sedum varieties that will add function and beauty to the rooftop.

Fall conferences are coming up, so be sure to look for us at the following events:The LiveWall® Vertical Green Wall System is growing, building the next level in the beautification and greening of spaces through living plants.

Roof Top Sedums is proud to be a Licensed Representative and Grower for the LiveWall® Vertical Green Wall System. LiveWall®, an exciting new innovation from the makers of LiveRoof®, is designed to utilize plants in a variety of outdoor and indoor vertical applications of various sizes, from large commercial buildings to smaller spaces such as residential decks and fences.

The LiveWall® System is Simple, Effective, Attractive, and Instant. Plants typically grow best in their natural state of growing vertically from the ground upward. LiveRoof® designed a system of planters to use the right soil with the right plants and an integrated irrigation system to produce the best possible results. It comes in three designs - LiveWall®, LiveScreen®, and LiveFence®, each created to serve different needs, from the spaces of walls, decks, and fences, to creating gardening opportunities for those at assisted living facilities and the disabled.

Reap these benefits of the LiveWall® System today:
  • Socially, planted living walls create a relaxing atmosphere, inspire creativity, and increase a sense of pride and place that helps reduce vandalism and littering.
  • Aesthetically, living walls bring color and interest to a space, and expand the usefulness of a building, creating an attractive addition to traditional siding treatments.
  • Green wall vegetation reduces the urban heat island effect by cooling the air and acting as a substrate for pollution, reducing noise, and conserving energy by further insulating structures.
  • A LiveWall® System Green Wall can create a habitat for butterflies, insects and songbirds, along with potential opportunities for urban farming to grow your own herbs and vegetables.
When you use Roof Top Sedums for your planting projects, you get the best. Period. ABOUT ROOF TOP SEDUMS
The seedlings for Roof Top Sedums were planted in 2006, when co-owner Teresa Nelson collaborated on a green roof project with LiveRoof LLC in Michigan. This collaboration led Teresa and her sister, Roxanne Nagel, to fill a void in the growing green roof industry, and Roof Top Sedums LLC began providing custom grown green roof vegetation for LiveRoof® modules and custom grown green roof plugs from their family farm in Davenport, Iowa.
